In 2016, over 5,200 students received award certificates and entry passes to the El Dorado County Fair. Many students work hard towards being selected for an award year after year. School administrators at each site select the criteria to be used and may recognize up to 20% of their student enrollment. Students in grades preschool through 12th grade who have excelled or shown significant improvement in areas such as citizenship, attendance, leadership, academics, athletics, or community service are selected for an award. Over fifteen years ago, the El Dorado County Office of Education initiated the Golden Star Student awards program for El Dorado County public school students, partnering with the El Dorado County Fair to recognize students at the Fair.
